An inspiring inaugural year for the Value and Values Award

The ruinous failure of Lebanon’s economic model and ensuing crises are stark examples of what happens when an economy is divorced from the values of its citizenry. Lebanon is now undergoing an economic transformation that will take generations. For this transformation to succeed, critical debate is needed to define the values that will be the foundation to a balanced and inclusive future for Lebanon.

The Value and Values Award is an essay writing competition to put the values of the youth at the centre of this important economic debate, and give voice to the Lebanese who will create and live with the new economic model of Lebanon.

In its inaugural year, over one hundred 17-21 year olds from across Lebanon submitted essays in answer to two questions.

School Category (17-18 year olds):

What value do cultural and creative industries such as music, art, cinema, literature and sport create in an economy?

University Category (19-21 year olds):

A key element of economic development is how societies define and value public goods, and how they allow such goods to be utilised culturally and ethically. Where do you stand with regards to this, as a Lebanese resident and stakeholder in the local economy?

A jury of highly respected public figures reviewed the essays based on their structure and ability to inspire, and selected nine finalists. You can download the winning essays here.
